iDTV - Integrated Digital Televison
iDTV are televisions that contain in-built digital receivers. Many currently also feature analogue receivers too.
These digital televisions may seem the perfect solution to prepare for the digital switchover if you really must change your television now. But be warned, most iDTV sets are designed for Freeview. You need to check that you will be able to receive Freeview in your area.
The sales staff should be able to tell you if your area can already receive Freeview. The rule of thumb is if you can receive Channel 5 now, then you can probably get freeview.
Some iDTV models do feature built in satellite TV decoders. If you are moving to satelllite for the first time do make sure you check out the installation costs. While it is not strictly necessary to sign up for Sky (Sky are advertising a number of satellite 'freeview' deals at the moment) the reality is that you will pay more for your installation if you don't. Also make sure that you budget for any satellite service you receive. With costs running up to £42 and upwards for complete packages, and the licence fee on top, the bill for moving to digital television can grow quickly.
iDTV televisions offer much more than the ability to receive digital television without additional set top boxes. While many features may seem like gimmicks there is one thing to look out for. All of the major broadcasters are commited to high definition television (HDTV) transforms the television as we know it. For more information take a look at our high definition televison page
