Digital TV Switchover - Government Help for Those in Need
The Government support scheme will be available to any home, for a modest fee, where at least one person is over 75 years old or where one person has a serious disability. Help will be given free of charge to households that meet these criteria but also receive pension credit, income support or job seekers allowance.
| Vulnerable people in society need more government help to make the switchover to digital TV, Ofcom's consumer panel has said. |
Ofcom estimate that 4.4m households in the UK will qualify for the help. More help is needed. Many people are in danger of being ripped off by rogue traders. Relying on family and friends for help and advice is simply not enough.
Most agencies including help the aged and Ofcom are already suggesting that the Government help package is woefully inadequate. The question of converting other televisions in the homes of those in need is a point to be considered.
